Sony Vaio S Series SVS13A12FXS Review

Sony Vaio S Series, SVS13A12FXS model, is just one of those models you want to have not because it has specs that make everyone stop from looking at another model to buy but because is just the right combination between hardware, features, ultra-portability, and long battery life. Not many laptops have reached this great combination and this is the main reason for presenting this high-end laptop.

SVS13A12FXS it’s not really affordable but on the other hand it cannot be considered expensive either. Just in the middle to be a high-end laptop at a reasonable price, in my opinion. So for the $1,000 price range I believe that users will get the fair value and power for this sum. Check price at Amazon

First of all, this notebook should really please those who are on the road. Portability is definitely an important advantage for this Sony. It weighs only 3.8 pounds (approx. 1.7kg) so it’s really light and still manages to incorporate some serious hardware for multitasking, light gaming with decent fps on some games, and day-to-day working and entertaining activities. The built-in quality is great and carbon fiber is the material used in the manufacturing processor for achieving the light weight. So it will not feel flimsy just ultra-portable, as it is.

Check the specs and features for the Sony Vaio S Series and see for yourself if this SVS13A12FXS model would meet your needs:

  • Given the light weight it’s somehow understandable that it incorporates a 13.3-inch LED backlit display with anti-reflective finish. The HD (1600 x 900 pixels) resolution is satisfactory enough for this panel size.
  • Intel Dual-Core Ivy Bridge i5-3210M Processor that runs at a core speed of 2.5GHz, it can be overclocked to achieve as much as 3.1GHz, and it has 3MB shared L3 cache. It’s a really great CPU that will manage delivering the necessary power for eliminating any lags during intense usage.
  • 6GB DDR3 RAM 1333 MHz that can be upgraded up to 12GB memory.
  • Nvidia GeForce GT 640M LE graphics card with 1GB DDR3 memory. This is a mid-range GPU for notebooks with a maximum memory of 2GB and I just wished it had those 2GB integrated. It would have been perfect. Nevertheless, it’s still a very satisfying card with DirectX 11 compatibility and since the resolution is not Full HD, many games can be enjoyed if you are into gaming a little, not hardcore gaming.
  • 640GB HDD storage space 5400 RPM. Of course it’s not as fast as 7200RPM so I assume that some users will feel the need to add an SSD to this Sony Vaio S Series.
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system but you can upgrade to Windows 8 if you prefer it that way.
  • HD camera.
  • CD/DVD player/burner.
  • Dolby Home Theater v4 technology for enhancing the sound quality of the built-in speakers and for offering users control in managing the audio settings easily.
  • 802.11b/g/n wireless and Bluetooth 4.0. The surprise in the connectivity department is brought by WiDi (Intel Wireless Display). I’m not sure just how many people will use this feature but it’s a nice detail, especially for entertaining activities on a larger screen (TV). Check price at Amazon
  • Connectors: 2 USB 3.0 ports as it is the trend, 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI output, VGA output, SD card reader, and microphone & headphone jacks.
  • The backlit keyboard and the big multi-gesture touchpad are definitely some nice additions for attracting customers.
  • I already stated that Sony Vaio S Series is an amazing laptop for the road and the light weight isn’t the only reason. The second one is the perfect battery life – 7 hours.
  • Another surprising part about this model is the incorporation of TPM (Trusted Platform Module) – software found mostly on business laptops/ultrabooks. It encrypts data and so protects it in case of physical theft or external software attacks.
  • 1 year warranty.

As I stated from the beginning, this model is a balanced and well-though combination between hardware, features, connectivity, and ultra-portability. It has some nice additions that can result to be very useful to some users and at a price range of $1,000 it’s a beautiful day-to-day 13-inch device.

However, if you want a slightly more expensive alternative belonging the same series to this SVS13A12FXS model, there is the Sony Vaio S Series 13P that can be customized directly on the manufacturer’s website.
