Best Laptops Under 1000 for 2013

Vizio CT15-A5 – even though this is an ultrabook by definition, I will still include it in this list for best laptops under 1000 because it’s almost a perfect device with just some minor overlooks during the designing and manufacturing process. Nevertheless, don’t disregard the fact that such wonderful ultrabooks usually exceed this price limit. But if you feel that you could spend more, I suggest taking a look at the Asus Zenbook UX31A Touch.

Coming back to this CT15, the first con would be the lack of a backlight keyboard. Otherwise, both the keyboard, with large keys for fast accurate typing, as well as the immense touchpad, enlarged for Windows 8, are one of the best, superiority has been achieved in this department. The second overlooked feature is the SD card, which in handy to many users. This is the part with the cons but now let’s see what this Vizio has to offer as pros.

Firstly, there is a wonderful 15.6-inches IPS display Full HD resolution. It’s top notch and the IPS part means great viewing angles. This display becomes even more appealing since it’s included into a unibody construction made entirely from aluminum. Moreover, the innovative discreet venting system will make sure that the CT15 doesn’t make its presence noticed through annoying noise, its beauty suffices.

As for hardware components, we have: Dual-Core i7-3517U Processor, 1.9GHz core speed, up to 3.0GHz overclocked, and 4MB L3 shared cache. As expected, the GPU is integrated in the CPU – Intel HD Graphics 4000. A generous storage space of 256GB SSD plus 4GB DDR3 RAM 1,333MHz complete the list for Vizio CT15-A5. A memory of 8GB would have been perfect but this still is one of the best laptops under 1000. This is definitely a fast ultrabook with smooth operations and responsiveness.

It’s a thin device, only 0.68 inches thick, but it still manages to incorporate a complete range of connectors, except a SD card, LAN port, and optical drive: 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 audio jack with built-in microphone, full-sized HDMI output, webcam, and 2 built-in speakers that deliver a nice audio experience. For connections users have 802.11n wireless and Bluetooth. In order to end in style, I will talk about ultra-portability – Vizio CT15-A5 weighs only 3.9 pounds (1.76kg) – and its battery life lasts up to 7 hours. With these two mentions, I end the review for the first option you have when it comes to best laptops under 1000. Check Price at Amazon

Toshiba Satellite S855-S5378 – in this case there is a nicely drawn balance between what you pay for and what you get and this is one of the greatest advantages for this acquisition so I hope consumers can appreciate that. The exterior design might seem bulky and give the impression of an unfinished job but for me it just looks like a truly affordable laptop that is used daily for any given task, whether for work, entertainment, multitasking or for doing homework.

It is solidly built and the aluminum brush offers a nice touch for the overall look. And even though might give the impression of being bulky it weighs only 5.5 pounds (2.5kg) which is excellent, you can take it wherever you go. What might disappoint interested customers is the 15.6 inches display bearing only HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels) but this is the resolution included for this price range, which is considerably lower than $1,000.

What truly impresses me about this Satellite as one of the best laptops under 1000 is the powerful CPU – Quad-Core i7-3630QM that runs on 2.4GHz core speed, overclocked reaches up to 3.4GHz, and has 6MB L3 shared cache. It also integrates the GPU available for this system, Intel HD Graphics 4000. The good news that it comes with 1696MB shared video memory so editing activities will go smooth, up to a certain professional level, and some gaming is possible especially on this HD resolution.

Toshiba Satellite S855-S5378 also packs a considerable memory – 8GB DDR3 RAM 1600 MHz, which can be upgraded up to 16GB but probably you won’t need that much. The storage space also comes in high amount 750GB however the 5400RPM data implies that at some point you might consider adding a SSD for achieving truly remarkable performances from a laptop under $1,000.

The touchpad with multi-touch control is above average and ready for exploring Windows 8. Another enchanting feature is the full-sized keyboard with numeric pad included and even though it’s not backlit at least is a premium raised-tile keyboard for fast and accurate typing on a battery that lasts 4 hours on average. The list of specs is nicely completed by the array of connectors and nothing is missing except a Blu-ray drive that is replaced with a DVD SuperMulti drive. Overall, Toshiba Satellite S855-S5378 is a model that fully deserves its place among best laptops under 1000 due to its ability of developing impressive raw power alongside nice graphics capabilities and portability so this is a device that matches its price perfectly. Check Price at Amazon

Asus VivoBook S400CA-DH51T – this is a totally worth buying model, addressing those who want to experience a laptop with a touch display but don’t want to empty their pockets while doing so. This VivoBook is in fact an ultrabook, probably the most affordable touch ultrabook, under $700, so it’s a wonderful choice that you won’t regret in the future. It’s one of the best laptops under $1000 in 2013 because it brings novelty to budget consumers as well.

As one of the best budget devices for 2013, it comes with a 14-inch touch display, HD resolution (1366×768 pixels), while a nice detail relies in the edge to edge glass that maximizes and enable fully rewarding touch experiences. A nice addition for the typing hours is the Chiclet keyboard however it’s not backlight and, given the low price tag, it’s not a surprise. What I can really say that it’s a con is the touchpad so a mouse might ease up your work and navigation.

The hardware system is not exactly developing an astonishing amount of power, just the right performances, without any stutters or bottlenecks: Dual-Core i5-3317U CPU, 1.7GHz clockspeed, up to 2.9GHz overclocked, and 3MB L3 cache, integrated in the CPU is the GPU, meaning Intel HD Graphics 4000 which is appropriate for a certain extent of editing and light gaming, 4GB DDR3 RAM but if you add another 4GB of memory you will see an increased level for the overall performance plus this addition doesn’t exactly spike the final price for the S400CA-DH51T, and a hybrid hard drive with 500GB 5400RPM plus 24GB SSD for a more accurate responsiveness.

Another attractive selling point for the VivoBook S400CA is its ultra-portability – weighs only 4 pounds (1.8kg) which is truly perfect for a 14 inches model. The battery life isn’t as impressive as the weight, around 5 hours on battery so this is mostly an average performance. Another con is the lack of a second USB 3.0 port, as most models have, but instead it comes with 2 USB 2.0 ports and an entire array of connectors that covers everything a user might need. Asus VivoBook S400CA-DH51T is one of the most affordable touch ultrabooks and besides that it also has the capability of delivering exactly what the user needs and expects at this price range. Chek Price at Amazon

MSI CX61 0NF-258US – is a power machine and definitely one of my recommended choices when it comes to best laptops under 1000. One motive is that this one can easily and righteously fit in the category of gaming laptops under 800 and basically when a device is good for some serious gaming then it’s good for anything else.

It doesn’t mean that it develops an impressive gaming power compared with other models that are also increasingly more expensive, it just means that it has a powerful Quad-Core CPU i7-3630QM with 6MB L3 cache and 2.4GHz core speed, a decent GPU – Nvidia GeForce GT 645M with 2GB DDR3 video memory, and a 6GB DDR3 memory amount that can be upgraded up to 16GB. These three components together will carry on any task in the smoothest manner and without any lags. The storage space represented by 750GB 5400RPM is also upgradable (add SSD) but even with this hardware, the CX61 0NF-258US is still impressively fast.

It’s great news when a laptop can be upgraded because it can keep up with any software, game, and any other application appearing in the tears to come however note that most MSI laptops come with warranty void stickers, which means that the 1 year warranty becomes void when upgrading a component.

The compromises you will have to make when opting for top-notch performance at a budget price is represented by HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels) for the 15.6 inches display, the lack of a backlight keyboard, otherwise a full-sized one with numeric pad on the side, and a mediocre touchpad. On the other hand, the good news is that you can take the MSI CX61 0NF-258US wherever you go since it weighs only 5.3 pounds (2.4kg), it lasts up to 5 hours on battery, and it has a complete list of connectors and connections.

As one of the best laptops under 1000, this model from the C series does a wonderful job, it’s a great budget gaming and multitasking laptop for 2013, compromises will have to be made, but the overall conclusion is that this is a worthy acquisition. Check Price at Amazon

Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 – this is not a model that can be classified on the best laptops under $1000 list however it exceeds just by a little the price limit so I just want to introduce this new model for those who can stretch a little their budget if they truly want impressive power. This Y500 might be perfectly considered the best gaming laptop under 1500. However, those who don’t necessitate this amount of raw power in their daily activities, have no motive to overspend.

What pops in the eyes of a potential customer is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M SLI, meaning two GT650M GPUs included, each having 2GB GDDR5 video memory so in total 4GB GDDR5 graphics memory that will definitely handle any existing game. The results of this impressive ensemble will be displayed on a 15.6 inches Full HD (1080p) display and the dual GPUs will run any modern game without the need to lower the settings.

It’s actually no surprise that the CPU is the same 2.4GHz Quad-Core i7-3630QM, it’s a powerful hardware component. The list is completed by 8GB of memory which can be easily upgraded and 1TB 5400RPM, which can be considered the weak link for the Lenovo IdeaPad Y500. Another disadvantage for this amazing system of power is the short battery life – only 3 hours and while gaming not even that much. Well, at least it weighs only 6.4 pounds (2.9kg), has a complete list of connectors, and a full-sized backlight keyboard with numeric pad. Check Price at Amazon

As you can easily observe, there are plenty of models to consider when choosing the best laptops under 1000 and I have tried to design a list that has a little bit of everything, even a touch ultrabook.

Tried the Lenovo Y500 and had to send it back right away, the display went white and nothing support had us try helped. Very disappointed. Now trying to decide what to do, try another one (it took 11 days to get this one) or go with another brand.
