ASUS VivoBook S400 Cheap Ultrabook Review

Asus VivoBook S400 (S400CA-DH51T) is a day-to-day ultrabook with one particular advantage in this continuously developing market: it’s really affordable so addressed to the masses and that is the first characteristic that pops up when talking about this portable device. We expect ultrabooks to be products that exceed $1,000 and there surely are a lot of those so it’s refreshing to see a product like this one.  Check price at Amazon

It runs on Windows 8 operating system. As you might already be familiar, this latest Microsoft OS was built with the word touch in mind so many manufacturers have approached this side, touchscreens are nowadays often incorporated in high-end portable electronics. I could not exactly state that this is a high-end product, it’s more a day-to-day device, but it definitely has a touch display, a feature that has attracted many customers. If you are looking for another model from the same manufacturer check Asus VivoBook X202E-DH31T an 11-inch laptop in the $550 price range.

Asus VivoBook S400 features a 14-inch touch LED-backlit display with HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels). It’s not a Full HD so this might be one of the compromises you are faced with when going for a more affordable product. The bright side is that at least this model is really affordable since there are ultrabooks on the market with the same HD resolution but a way higher cost. The medium-sized screen just the right size to take it wherever you go, offers great viewing angles and a clear picture.

In what concerns the hardware assembly, things look like this: Dual-Core i5-3317U Processor that runs on 1.7GHz core speed, on Turbo Boost it reaches as much as 2.6GHz, and has 3MB L3 shared cache. This CPU also integrated the GPU – Intel HD Graphics 4000. So as I said this is an everyday ultrabook and from time to time you can enjoy some light gaming. Editing activities are possible but not in a really professional manner.Check price at Amazon

The list is completed by 4GB DDR3 RAM 1,600MHz which I don’t think it’s upgradeable but I might be wrong and 500GB hard drive 5400RPM and for an extra boost in performances and speed an additional 24GB SSD (Solid State Drive). To draw a small conclusion in respect to hardware components, I would say that everything looks really fine and multitasking activities can be engaged without users experiencing lags.

Moreover, Asus VivoBook S400 features a Chiclet keyboard which is great for typing but the disappointment is that it’s not backlit. Some customers will consider this a deal breaker so it’s really up to what everyone needs and wants. As it is with most models, the touchpad is enlarged for easier navigation when you are not using your fingers on the touch display.

The battery life is definitely not one of the best but at 5 hours on average it’s not too bad on the other hand. So it’s just in between. Asus VivoBook S400 weighs 4 pounds (1.8 kg) and it’s thin as ultrabooks should be, being also the reason for not including an optical drive. At the same time it offers a feeling of high durability and nicely strong built device, while looking great and elegant due to the aluminum textures.

For connectivity users have: 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, an Ethernet port, unfortunately only 1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 3.0 ports, SD card reader, VGA port, and 1 full size HDMI output. And in the box it will also be included the 1 year global warranty together with the 1 year accidental damage protection warranty.

To sum this review on Asus VivoBook S400 I will say that I was really excited about this ultrabook when I firstly saw it and I am just as excited now after putting in writing all its specs so at this price tag I would definitely consider this model as a top choice and I hope customers will think that too.
